Vedic Astrology on GemZen: Nakshatras, Dashas, and the Sidereal Zodiac

Two Zodiacs, One Sky

Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, where 0° Aries is defined by the spring equinox. Vedic astrology (Jyotish) uses the sidereal zodiac, aligned with the actual star constellations. The difference — called the ayanamsha — is currently about 24°, meaning most planets shift back by roughly one sign when viewed through the Vedic lens.

GemZen calculates the Lahiri ayanamsha (the standard used by the Indian government) and converts all tropical positions to sidereal automatically.

27 Nakshatras: The Lunar Mansions

While Western astrology divides the zodiac into 12 signs of 30° each, Vedic astrology adds a finer layer: 27 nakshatras (lunar mansions) of 13°20' each. Each nakshatra has its own ruler, deity, symbol, and nature.

Your Moon's nakshatra at birth (Janma Nakshatra) is one of the most important factors in Jyotish — it determines your Vimshottari dasha sequence and reveals deep emotional and karmic patterns.

Vimshottari Dasha: Planetary Time Periods

The Vimshottari Dasha is a 120-year cycle of planetary periods that unfolds from birth. Each major period (Mahadasha) is ruled by a planet and lasts 6-20 years. Within each major period, sub-periods (Bhuktis) cycle through all nine Vedic planets.

Understanding your current dasha period is like knowing the season of your life — it tells you which planetary energy is most active and what themes are front and center.
