Vedic Chart
A sidereal chart in the Jyotish tradition — Lahiri ayanamsha, the 27 nakshatras, the North-Indian kundli, divisional charts and your Vimshottari dasha timeline.
Vedic astrology, or Jyotish, is the astrological tradition of the Indian subcontinent. Its defining difference from Western practice is the sidereal zodiac: positions are measured against the fixed stars rather than the moving equinox, so an ayanamsha — most commonly the Lahiri value — is subtracted to bridge the two frames. The result places most planets roughly one sign earlier than a tropical chart, which is why a Vedic reading can feel unfamiliar at first.
The tradition adds layers Western charts do not. The Moon’s path is divided into 27 nakshatras, or lunar mansions, each with its own ruler and symbolism. The chart is shown as a kundli — a square diagram rather than a wheel — and unfolds into divisional charts, the vargas, that zoom into specific areas of life. Timing runs through the Vimshottari dasha system, a sequence of planetary periods that colours long stretches of a life in turn.
GemZen calculates all of this from your birth data: the sidereal chart with Lahiri ayanamsha, your Moon nakshatra and pada, the North-Indian kundli, key divisional charts and your unfolding dasha timeline — presented for study and reflection, so you can learn the system rather than simply receive a verdict.
How it works in GemZen
1
Enter your birth data
Provide birth date, exact time and place. Sidereal positions are computed with the Lahiri ayanamsha, and your ascendant (lagna) and Moon nakshatra depend on an accurate birth time.
2
Read the sidereal chart and kundli
See your planets in the sidereal zodiac, your lagna, and the North-Indian kundli, plus each planet’s nakshatra and pada — the lunar mansion detail at the heart of Jyotish.
3
Explore vargas and dashas
Open the divisional charts to zoom into specific life areas, then follow the Vimshottari dasha timeline to see which planetary periods and sub-periods are unfolding.
Divisional charts (varga)
Each varga magnifies one domain of the birth chart for closer reading.

Common questions
Is the Vedic chart calculator free?
Yes — create a free GemZen account and cast your Vedic chart at no cost. Extended divisional charts, dasha detail and saved history come with paid plans.
What is the difference between Vedic and Western astrology?
Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, measured against the fixed stars, while most Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac tied to the equinoxes. GemZen applies the Lahiri ayanamsha to compute the sidereal positions.
What are nakshatras and dashas?
Nakshatras are the 27 lunar mansions the Moon’s path is divided into, each with its own symbolism. The Vimshottari dasha is a system of planetary time-periods used to sequence the themes of a life.
Can a Vedic chart predict my future?
We present Jyotish as a system for study, reflection and entertainment — not prediction, and not medical, legal or financial advice.
